BROOKLYN, MI.- - Jeff Gordon has had his share of success at
Michigan International Speedway during his racing career, including two wins, three poles, and 14 top-five finishes in
22 Cup Series starts. On Wednesday June 9, Gordon will visit Victory Lane at MIS once again, but this
time he'll receive a declaration by Governor Jennifer Granholm making June 9 "Jeff Gordon Day" in the State of Michigan.
The Michigan House of Representatives "Jeff Gordon Day" resolution was sponsored by Rep. Clark Bisbee of Jackson.
"I'm pleased to add my accolades to Jeff Gordon on Jeff Gordon Day," said Governor Granholm. "On behalf of Michigan race
fans on two peninsulas, we salute his commitment to the sport of racing and look forward to seeing him win a third race
at Michigan International Speedway soon." Gordon and Governor Granholm will visit MIS on Wednesday, June 9 as a part of its
Media Day previewing the DHL 400 race weekend. Gordon is also scheduled to take Governor Granholm on a high-speed ride
around the two-mile MIS oval in a two-seat DuPont Chevrolet.
"We love racing in Michigan," Gordon said. "To have the Governor recognize my visit in this way is truly an honor."
Not only has Gordon excelled on the track, he has gone above and beyond the call of duty giving his time and money
to the Jeff Gordon Foundation in support of various charities.
"We're delighted that the State of Michigan is recognizing Jeff Gordon for his many accomplishments, not only on the
track, but off it as well, said MIS President Brett Shelton. "Jeff is a great spokesperson for our sport and we are
delighted that he's being honored at MIS and throughout the state on June 9."
Rep. Bisbee offered the following resolution commemorating June 9, 2004, as Jeff Gordon Day:
Whereas, We congratulate Jeff Gordon on his incredible NASCAR career thus far, including his four
Nextel Cup Championships. As members of the Jackson and Lenawee County communities gather at the
Michigan International Speedway, where Jeff Gordon has won twice, we are proud to add our voice to
commend everyone who works to make his success possible; and Whereas, Jeff Gordon has been one of the
most accomplished drivers in the Nextel Cup Series since his rookie year in 1993 placing him among NASCAR's
top 10 for the tenth straight year. Jeff Gordon ranks seventh on the all-time win list with 66 victories; and
Whereas, Cooperation is the key to success in any endeavor as is clearly evident in Jeff Gordon's team headed by
crew chief Robbie Loomis. Every component that makes up the No. 24 DuPont Chevrolet car from the pit crew to the
spotters above the track work as one unit to produce the best outcome on race day; and Whereas, In addition to his
duties as a NASCAR driver, Jeff Gordon has gone above and beyond the call of duty as a community leader as well.
The Jeff Gordon Foundation, founded in 1999, primarily supports charities working on behalf of children in need.
The Foundation supports the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, The Marrow Foundation in
partnership with the Hendrick Marrow Program and Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. Gordon, along with
Darrell Waltrip, was named 1997's NASCAR Person of the Year by Winston Cup Illustrated Magazine, and was recipient
of the True Value Man of the Year award in 1996 for his work on behalf of Leukemia research; and Whereas, On June
9th, representatives from the Michigan International Speedway and the entire Jackson and Lenawee County communities
join in recognizing the numerous accomplishments, including those as a community leader, of Jeff Gordon; now,
therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives, That the members of this legislative body commemorate
June 9th, 2004, as Jeff Gordon Day in Michigan and express appreciation for his valuable contributions to this
state; and be it further Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to Jeff Gordon and the management
and workers of the Michigan International Speedway.
